Biological Material and Dry Ice Shipment

Safe handling and shipping of biological materials and dry ice is required by regulatory agencies including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Department of Transport (DOT), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Training includes general awareness and familiarization (video), function-specific training and security awareness. "Bloodborne Pathogen" training is prerequisite for all shippers who handle human blood, body fluids, tissues or human cell lines. Participation is required once every two years for all employees, graduate students, medical students, principal investigators, physicians, nurses, technicians and post-doctoral fellows who engage in packaging, preparing shipping documents, shipping or transporting biological materials, patient specimens and/or dry ice.

Radiation Safety Certification Training

Radiation safety certification training is required for all researchers and lab personnel handling sources of radioactive materials. Training topics include sources of radiation, atomic structure and radioactivity, radiation health effects, measurement of radiation, radiation protection regulations and license requirements, exposure/contamination control, radiation waste handling, and a review of the college’s radiation policies. The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of handling radioactive materials within the context of a biological/chemical laboratory. Those who pass an exam at the end of the course will receive a certificate. A radiation safety training certificate is required prior to ordering and handling sources of radioactive materials, under NYC Department of Health regulations.

Radiation Safety Annual Refresher

Annual refresher training is required after receiving a radiation safety certificate, and for researchers working in a laboratory where sources of radioactive materials are used or stored. Training topics include sources of radiation, radiation protection regulations, exposure/contamination control, radiation waste procedures and college policies. Annual radiation safety refresher training is required by law under NYC Department of Health regulations.

Clinical and General Safety Training

Clinical and General Safety training has been revised and incorporated into the Annual Hospital Training (AHT), to provide Joint Commission and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)-required training in one targeted session. Completing the program, developed by the Division of Quality and Patient Safety, ensures that all members of our care teams are familiar with vital information including bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazard communication, and fire safety.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogen training has been revised and incorporated into other training programs to provide Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)-required trainings in one targeted training session, depending on your workplace setting and responsibilities.

  • If you work in a laboratory, attend laboratory safety training.
  • If you work in both a laboratory and clinical area, attend laboratory safety training
  • If you work in a clinical area, attend clinical and general safety training.
  • If you do not work in a laboratory or clinical area, but you may be exposed to a bloodborne pathogen or hazardous chemical, attend clinical and general safety training.

G-97 Cryogenic Liquid Certificate of Fitness (FDNY)

G-97 cryogenic liquid certificate of fitness (FDNY) training is part of a New York City Fire Department (FDNY) certification for supervising the storage, handling and use of cryogenic liquid over the FDNY permit threshold (e.g. 60 gallons). The G-97 applies to cryogenic liquids not stored or used in an FDNY-permitted laboratory with a C-14 CoF holder. If cryogenic liquids are stored or used in an FDNY-permitted laboratory, only a C-14 CoF is required. Please contact EHS to assess if a G-97 is required. This training is offered upon request. To schedule an assessment or training, contact EHS.
