For Students

The following student groups at Weill Cornell Medical College are provided with training. It is the responsibility of the contact listed to schedule training with Environmental Health and Safety as needed.

Computational Biology

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: six
  • Approximate training date(s): fall and spring
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness
  • Comments: students may be located at Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller or Sloan-Kettering.

Chemical Biology

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: eight
  • Approximate training date: early August
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal
  • Comments: students may be located at Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller or Sloan-Kettering.

Ph.D. Students

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: 60
  • Approximate training date: early September
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal

Tri-Institutional M.D.-Ph.D. Students

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: 12-14
  • Approximate training date: July
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety, Student Clinical Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, clinical safety, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal
  • Comments: students may be located at Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller or Sloan-Kettering. Students live in dormitory buildings at one of the three institutions.

Medical Students (First Year)

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: 100+
  • Approximate training date: early September
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety, Student Clinical Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, clinical safety, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal

Physician Assistant Students

  • Student background: bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Approximate number of students per session: 32
  • Approximate training date: early April
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Clinical Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, and clinical safety

Gateway Summer Students

  • Student background: undergraduate students in freshman or sophomore year of college
  • Approximate number of students per session: 15
  • Approximate training date: early June
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal
  • Comments: students are at the college for 10 weeks (June-August), and may be located at Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller or Sloan-Kettering. Some students live in dormitory buildings while others travel from home.

Traveler Summer Students

  • Student background: undergraduate students
  • Approximate number of students per session: 25
  • Approximate training date: early June
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Laboratory Safety Orientation
  • Training description: student residence fire safety and emergency preparedness, and student laboratory safety
  • Comments: students come to the college for a seven-week time period and live in dormitory buildings.

Access Program

  • Student background: current undergraduate students
  • Approximate number of students per session: 10
  • Approximate training date: early June
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and Student Laboratory Safety
  • Training description: residential fire safety and emergency preparedness, and laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal
  • Comments: students live in dormitories at the college for the summer. They generally go to the travelers training session in coordination with Elizabeth Wilson-Anstey.

High School Interns

  • Student background: current high school students
  • Approximate number of students per session: 15
  • Approximate training date: early July
  • Training title(s): Student Laboratory Safety
  • Training description: laboratory safety including fire safety, biological safety, chemical safety and waste disposal

Urban Semester Program

  • Student background: current undergraduate students at Cornell University, Ithaca
  • Approximate number of students per session: 32 (maximum)
  • Approximate training date: early September or February
  • Training title(s): Student Residence Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness
  • Training description: fire safety and emergency preparedness
  • Comments: students are at the college during the fall or spring semester for 14 weeks
